As autistic individuals age, they often face a unique set of challenges that remain widely under-recognised in current healthcare and social support systems.
Recent studies have shown that autistic adults experience:
⚠️ Higher rates of chronic health conditions
⚠️ Increased social isolation
⚠️ Significant barriers to employment and housing
Despite increased awareness of autism, there is still a critical gap in policies and services that support active and healthy ageing for this population. A 2015 study by Van Heijst & Geurts highlights that the quality of life significantly declines for many autistic adults due to:
- Limited access to tailored healthcare
- Inadequate social support networks
- A lack of autism-specific geriatric services
As a result, many older autistic individuals are left behind by traditional ageing systems, facing poorer outcomes in both physical and mental health.
To build a more inclusive and supportive future, we must advocate for:
✅ Autism-inclusive healthcare designed for older adults
✅ Programs that promote active ageing and social connection
✅ Accessible employment and housing solutions for ageing autistic individuals
It’s time to raise awareness, shape inclusive policies, and promote action — so that every autistic person can age with dignity, support, and opportunity.
