While awareness of autism has grown in recent years, there is still limited research and understanding of how ageing impacts individuals on the autism spectrum.
In 2016, Confederación Autismo España published a key report titled “Ageing and Autism Spectrum Disorder – An Invisible Vital Stage”.
This executive summary highlights the urgent need to recognise ageing as a critical life stage for autistic individuals—one that requires specialised support systems to promote active ageing and ensure a high quality of life.
The report identifies three key areas for healthy ageing in the autism community: health, safety and participation. These dimensions are essential to ensuring that autistic adults are not left behind as they grow older.
